Gators baseball wins 12th straight

GAINESVILLE — Most college catchers do not call their own game. Florida’s Mike Zunino is not like most college catchers.

The junior called every pitch of Saturday’s 8-3 win against Florida Gulf Coast in front of 3,413 fans in McKethan Stadium. It gave the No. 1 Gators (14-1) the series victory against Florida Gulf Coast (6-7) and extended their winning streak to 12 games, two shy of the school record.

While pitch selection usually comes from the dugout with a head coach or pitching coach signaling in pitches to the catcher, Zunino has earned Florida coach Kevin O’Sullivan’s trust enough to call pitches on his own. Zunino spends several days studying scouting reports on each opponent, and even eyes batting practice swings to figure out batters’ strengths and weaknesses.
